MISSION
We are a community-based 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to foster a passion for the game of lacrosse, and make positive contributions to our community. We make this happen through sports programs, specifically allowing players and coaches to develop their skills and love for the game. Our organization also supports our community by providing heating assistance to families, sponsoring group-oriented extracurricular activities, and hosting a youth lacrosse tournament in South Portland, Maine.
ABOUT TED HELLIER
We do it all ‘for the love of Ted.’ And truthfully, we wouldn’t be who we are without him.
Ted Hellier was a lacrosse coach, and played a large part in bringing youth lacrosse to South Portland. As a coach, Ted expected 3 things from his players: he wanted his players to be relentless, to play as a team, and to have fun. Ted also believed that lacrosse should be accessible to all children, and worked tirelessly to gather and distribute the necessary gear to kids who otherwise would not have had access to it. His coaching had a positive and lasting impact on his players and community, who remember him as being a gentle and deeply knowledgeable teacher, who found the good in each player and encouraged them to continue in the sport he loved.
In June of 2012, Ted was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. His South Portland community rallied around him and his family to support them throughout his battle. In 2013, the South Portland Lacrosse Invitational Tournament (SPLIT) was renamed to the Ted Hellier Lacrosse Festival. Ted was able to experience the first THLF before his passing in June 2013. Through the Ted Hellier Lacrosse Festival, we are able to continue to share the joy and love of lacrosse that Ted shared, and are able to continue to support our boosters and community through the funds that the festival provides.
